Now we are in the last half of summer I love to look around and see how people's gardens are doing. Don't ask why my own personal garden can only grow Beans and Tomatoes, but we had a bird problem this year but it was too late before we realized what happened.
I removed a large hot tub a few years back and put in to off ground box style gardens. My wife does must of the gardening and made sure only organic soils were used plus she has added compost... Last year wasn't great so I encouraged her to just add Black Soil - nothing else. Things improved but before we knew it we lost half of our garden to the sparrows and finches... we also have a bird feeder near by with bath and two apple trees for out birds to use so we do have maybe more than a normal amount of birds in our back yard.
Part way through I did invest in a ceramic Cat and Owl to watch over our garden. It worked great for the first week, but the birds started becoming wise to it. We then found almost on a daily basis we had to re position the Cat and Owl. Some areas we were able to mesh cover of which was the best solution, but can be tough to handle in large areas.
Anyway our advice is do invest in the birds ceramic predators but you have to make them look real by moving them around. For us - start earlier next year and stay on top of it.
